Children with a large vocabulary have an advantage. The short sentences in books for beginning readers give children less information to store in their short-term memories. When the texts children read advance from simple sentences of three or four words to longer sentences, they need to store more information. Much of the book covers ways to improve working memory through exercises that simplify the complexity of incoming data, enhance your ability to work with information and keep your working memory in optimal condition. Perhaps overly upbeat, but it contains useful new insights into thinking well.

Sensory Memory. Sensory memory is the earliest stage of memory. During this stage, sensory information from the environment is stored for a very brief period of time, generally for no longer than a half-second for visual information and 3 or 4 seconds for auditory information. There’s nothing like the smell of old books or the crack of a new one’s spine. (Plus, you’ll never run low on battery.) As it turns out, diving into a page-turner can also offer benefits toward your health and happiness. Although more and more people own e-books, it seems safe to say that real books aren’t going anywhere yet, and these benefits of reading are here to stay.

The memory advantage for color may stem from the synesthetes' frequent sensory experiences with colors following the secondary responses to words. These experiences in return sensitize color-processing areas in the brain and lead to enhanced color perception (Banissy et al., ).
